The Magic of The Glen

We recently had the privilege of being invited to experience The Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire, Scotland. This stunning 5-star hotel is famously known for its three fantastic golf courses (one of which hosted the Ryder Cup in 2014).

Nestled in the heart of Scotland, the hotel is not just a haven for golf enthusiasts, but a historical landmark that has been offering unparalleled luxury and adventure since its opening in 1924 – this being their centenary year. Our visit was an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the property’s rich history, whilst indulging in a whole host of activities that make this ‘glorious playground’ a unique destination.

After a scenic, 50-minute journey from Edinburgh Airport, our first day commenced with their gundog training experience. As a group of dog-lovers, this was highly anticipated and did not disappoint. We enjoyed a demonstration by four beautiful black Labradors and their handlers, and were able to give the training a go for ourselves, as well as giving out lots of cuddles!

We next ventured into the world of falconry, the ancient sport of kings. The hotel's Falconry School offered us an intimate encounter with these majestic birds of prey. Flying the falcons under the guidance of expert falconers was not only exhilarating, but it also provided insight into the meticulous care and training that these birds undergo.

Our adventure continued with a session of ferret handling, an unexpected yet utterly delightful experience! It was a fascinating introduction to a less commonly known aspect of British countryside sports.

On our first evening we were kindly hosted in The Parlour for pre-dinner whisky tasting. The evening was carefully curated by their in-house Whisky Sommelier. We were then surprised with a bagpiper who led us to The Glendevon for an intimate private ‘Taste of Scotland’ dinner. The food was simply delicious, and even included an address to the haggis!

No visit to Gleneagles would be complete without engaging in the traditional sports of shooting and archery. On our second day, the group was treated to air rifle shooting, clay pigeon shooting and archery where beginners and experienced shooters alike found joy in the challenge and the thrill of hitting the target. The archery session, set against the backdrop of the stunning Scottish landscape, was equally rewarding, with each arrow shot adding to the day's memorable experiences.

Golf, the sport synonymous with Gleneagles, was another highlight of our stay. Looking over the greens of the PGA Centenary Course, the very grounds where the Ryder Cup was played, was awe-inspiring. The meticulously maintained courses, coupled with the breathtaking scenery, made for an unforgettable golfing experience. We were also treated to lunch at the Dormy Clubhouse where they specialise in homemade Italian style pizza and authentic Indian curries. Safe to say nobody left hungry!

Our exploration of the estate included a tour of the riding school and stables, where we learned about the equestrian programs offered. The passion and knowledge of the Gleneagles staff was evident throughout, making it a truly educational visit. The racket sports facility was our next stop, showcasing Gleneagles' commitment to offering diverse sporting activities. From tennis to paddle, the facilities were first-class.

In conclusion, our retreat at Gleneagles was more than just a familiarisation trip; it was a journey through the heart of Scottish luxury and adventure. The experiences we shared, from mastering the art of falconry to the peaceful moments spent in the stables, have left us with memories that will be cherished forever. ‘The Glen’ is truly a gem in Scotland's crown, offering a unique blend of history, sport, and unparalleled hospitality.
